Education as an Aid to Life: How Montessori Honors Human Potential at TMSOE

August 17, 2026

At the heart of Montessori education is a deep, unwavering respect for human potential. The roots of this philosophy began when Dr. Maria Montessori—one of Italy's first female physicians—worked alongside children who had been written off by traditional society and the medical establishment.

Rather than viewing these children through a lens of limitation, Dr. Montessori provided them with hands-on materials and a carefully prepared environment tailored to their true developmental needs. The result was remarkable growth. That breakthrough transformed our understanding of human learning and remains the foundation of everything we do at The Montessori School of Englewood (TMSOE).

As a tuition-free public charter school in West Englewood, TMSOE was founded on this exact principle: every child, regardless of background, deserves access to an environment that recognizes their inherent dignity, honors their potential, and equips them to be agents of change in their community.

A Scientific Lens on Human Nature

Dr. Montessori approached child development not with rigid assumptions, but as a scientist. Through keen observation, she recognized that humans possess innate, universal characteristics and follow predictable patterns of growth. At our core, we are designed to learn, adapt, and thrive.

Dr. Montessori identified specific stages of growth—which we call the Planes of Development—and a set of Human Tendencies that drive learning from birth through adolescence:

  • Orientation & Exploration: The drive to understand and navigate one's surroundings.
  • Order & Abstraction: The need to make sense of the world and think symbolically.
  • Work & Repetition: The desire to practice, refine skills, and achieve mastery with hands and mind.
  • Communication & Association: The need to connect, collaborate, and build community with others.

These tendencies are not random; they are natural forces guiding every child to meet their physical, intellectual, and social needs. When an environment thwarts these natural drives, children often express frustration or disruption. But when an environment honors them, children blossom into self-directed, confident learners.

Education That Aligns With Human Nature

In traditional classrooms, adult instruction is often imposed on children from the top down. In a Montessori environment, we align education with the natural unfolding of each child's abilities.

Our multi-age classrooms—from Primary/Head Start through Middle School—are carefully prepared to support each developmental plane. Here, the adult’s role shifts from a traditional "teacher" who dictates information to a Montessori Guide who observes, prepares the room, and connects each child to the work that matches their inner readiness.

A Cosmic Perspective: Cultivating Whole Children ("Heads, Hands, and Hearts")

Montessori’s vision of education extends beyond individual academic success. She viewed human beings as part of an interconnected web of life, where every person plays a vital role in maintaining balance and harmony.

At TMSOE, this cosmic perspective drives our commitment to teaching the whole child—heads, hands, and hearts:

  • Heads: Rigorous, self-directed academic exploration across mathematics, language, sciences, and humanities.
  • Hands: Practical life skills, urban gardening, artistic expression, and real-world micro-economy projects.
  • Hearts: Culturally responsive practices, peaceful conflict resolution, restorative justice, and deep community pride.

By embedding culturally affirming and trauma-informed practices into our daily rhythm, we help our students build humility, social awareness, and stewardship. Education is not just about personal achievement; it is about raising conscious, compassionate citizens who care for their neighborhood and the world.

The Power of Adaptation and Self-Construction

Children do not enter the world as empty vessels to be filled with facts. They are self-constructing beings who build their intelligence, character, and worldview through active interaction with their environment.

Through their senses, their hands, their minds, and their relationships, TMSOE students learn to adapt constructively to an ever-changing world. By giving children meaningful work, real responsibilities, and supportive choices, we nurture their innate drive toward self-perfection and independence.

Education as an Aid to Life

Ultimately, we believe education should serve as a vital support for life itself. When learning environments align with the science of human development, we unlock limitless potential.

Montessori education offers more than a teaching technique—it is a visionary framework rooted in observation, equity, and profound respect for every human being. At The Montessori School of Englewood, we see our students not as empty vessels, but as capable, creative, and resilient leaders ready to shape their own futures.
